Disney’s 2012 film, “Red Tails” is a historic action and dramatic film about a crew of African American pilots who have graduated from the Tuskegee Program and are in the center of Italy during World War II.1 As they are going through the obstacle of War and their effects, they must first face the barrier placed onto them because of segregation and discrimination shown based on their skin color.

The 332nd fighter pilot squadron was ultimately given the opportunity to prove themselves by escorting bomber aircrafts in which resulted the Tuskegee Airmen to have the lowest loss records of all escort fighter groups.2 the Tuskegee Airmen, not only made history but paved the way in a new light for many other individuals of color.

This film is directed, produced and co-written by Anthony Hemingway, George Lucas, John Ridley, Aaron McGuder and John B. Holway. This film also stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Gerald McRancy and David Oyelowo.3 This Film also stars commonly known actors of today such as Terrence Howard, Marcus T. Paulk , and Michael B. Jordan.4

Welcome! My name is Paula Perez and this website will focus on the historical accuracy of Disney’s film “Red Tails” using the historical documents, both primary and secondary sources, of the Tuskegee Airmen and Operation Shingle. This website was created for a class taken at the University of Mary Washington by professor Jeff McClurken called US History and Film.
